ALEX XUYAO BAI, 11

Alex Xuyao Bai has just turned 11 and will begin Year 7 at Elim Christian College in Auckland in February 2022. He started learning the piano from Tianhui Zhang at the age of five in California, USA. Since the age of six, Alex has been a student of Able Zhu in Auckland, NZ. He joined the Pettman National Junior Academy of Music in September 2020 where he receives instruction from Michael Endres. Alex has won numerous prizes in many local and international competitions including North Shore, West Auckland, South Auckland, IRMTNZ and Hamilton; Oxford, UK; Charleston and New York, USA; Valsesia and Rome, Italy. He was invited to perform at Winners’ Recital at Carnegie Hall in New York. Alex gained a Merit Award in the 2019 APPA/ARA Lodge Music Competition and performed in the Great Hall, Auckland Town Hall. He won the NZ International Star Idol for Kids and Teens in piano performance in 2019 and was invited to perform in the Chinese Spring Festival Gala by Guangdong Television in China. He played a piano concerto with the NZ Young Artists Festival Orchestra at the age of nine. Alex is also keen on chamber music. In the NZCT Chamber Music Contest 2021, his trio group AHA was the youngest finalist in Auckland District and entered the Northern Regional Finals as one of the top five groups from Auckland.

Alex also loves playing the clarinet. Basketball is his favourite sport.
